I was going through my books, and I came across one of my favorites; a book of Richard Guindon cartoons.
He had a wonderful design quality to his drawings, and his line work always amazed me with its paradox of looseness and precision.

I grew up reading his cartoons in the Minneapolis Tribune that I read in my school's library.

( We lived in a tiny farm town, so my folks only got the town paper, once a week, and the St. Cloud Times, everyday. On Sunday, after church, I would run to the drugstore to buy my comic books, candy, and whatever Sunday paper was left, so the library was my only guaranteed source of Big City cartoon work).
Here is a drawing inspired by this great cartoonist.

Skipper Bivins, the star of this show, is an extremely likable guy, and the show is a hoot!
What I have learned from only the first show, is that the trick is to walk along the banks of the creeks , rivers, and lakes, sticking your foot into each and every hole that is discovered in the murky water, attempting to lure whatever is lurking in there out with the tasty sight of your foot.
Once it takes the bait,(!), you stick your arm down there to bring the fish up.

30 years of American manned space exploration ended today, and I don't know when it will start up again.
So...I created this cartoon, playing off the cliche' 'will work for food' signs, and also playing off NASA Administrator Charles Bolden's quote from an interview in 2010, talking about what President Obama wanted from him:
"When I became the NASA administrator -- or before I became the NASA administrator -- he charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science ... and math and engineering,"
So...now America has her thumb out, pointing to the heavens, asking..." Can you spare a lift?"

My son and I are hooked on this crazy game for the PlayStation 2, " Katamari Damacy".
The game play is very simple and straightforward. The story:
" In a freak accident, the King of All Cosmos inadvertently annihilated all the stars.
The task of fixing the King's mistake has fallen upon his son, the Prince.
In order to restore the glorious starry sky, the Prince must roll around a heap of objects on Earth, using the katamari, gathering more and more things from the item rich planet and sending them off into the night sky.
Does the Prince have what it takes to succeed? "
The player starts off with a little ball like object, that smaller items stick to once the 'ball' makes contact.
As you collect more and more items, from people, to elephants, trees, walls, etc., the katamari grows larger and larger, until you are circling the globe, grabbing islands, ships, and yes, Godzilla.
I can't recommend this gentle, goofy game highly enough.

Kubert School Graduation

Twenty seven years have passed since I graduated from the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, Inc. Hard to believe so much time has gone by.
I got in to the school right after graduating high school, and managed to hang on for the three years. I went to class during the day, had maybe an hour or so before I had to go to work at a local bodega, then home by 11 to get started on my homework. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but that's why you do stuff like that when you are young.
This picture is of the trailer where I studied animation with Milt Neil and Bruce Wands.

Space: The Bunny Frontier

So...being the masochist that I am, while juggling multiple projects, I decide to
create some animations for the Toronto Animated Image Society's Bunny Jam.
The rule was simple, create animations, no longer than 10 seconds, featuring bunnies, in honor of this being the Year of the Rabbit.
After creating the animations, I realized that I could create a little more animation, linking the already created clips together and then submit the finished short to ASIFA-Atlanta's Roll Your Own, and Dragon*Con's Independent Film Festival.
The real excitement happened when I tried to burn a DVD on Thursday the 5th. My existing software was corrupted, so I had to replace it. Bought software off the web, well known company, in fact I had used them before on a different machine, I won't mention their name. This software was so buggy, that they sent me a list of instructions detailing how to REMOVE it from my computer so I could re-install it.
Bear in mind that the clock was ticking, and I had to mail the DVD to the Dragon*Con festival on the 6th, and each install, un-install took hours. So, after wasting all that time, I found the perfect solution to my problem.
Thanks to capitalism, and sweet, sweet competition; I found the solution with
Movavi Video Suite 9.
So, I submitted to the festival, but won't find out if it was accepted until June.
I'll keep you posted.

The mysterious Sphinx, poser of the famous question, "What walks on all fours in the morning, two legs at midday, and four legs in the evening?"
On a side note, when I was Art Director at Stone Mountain Productions, a discussion was taking place about how "sphinx" should be pronounced.
A woman was asking why you didn't say "spinks" instead of "sfinks", and a co-worker said because the ph made the f sound. She argued that it didn't make sense, and he countered with, " It's the same reason you don't say "telepone".

The Teumessian Fox was a terrible creature that was ravaging the countryside of Thebes. She devoured people and livestock, destroyed crops, and couldn't be stopped because she was destined to never be caught.
Remember yesterday's beast, Laelaps, the hound that always caught its prey?
Well, they sicced him on this monster.
So, a never ending chase ensued, and Zeus, who hated conundrums like this,
turned both creatures into stone and threw them to the heavens, where some say they became Canis Major,(Laelaps), and Canis Minor,( the Fox).

Argus, the Goddess Hera's watchman, was charged with guarding one of Zeus's girlfriends, Io, who was in the form of a white heifer and chained to an olive tree.
Zeus sends Hermes to sing Argus to sleep. After all of Argus' eyes close, Hermes bashes him in the head with a rock, and takes that hot cow back to his boss.
Hera recycles all of those peepers by putting them on the tail of the peacock.

The Minotaur

Talk about Jerry Springer material, here's the tale of the Minotaur in a nutshell:
King prays for white bull, as a sign that he has Poseidon's approval to become king instead of one of his brothers.
The bull appears, but the new King refuses to sacrifice it to Poseidon because it's so beautiful.
Aphrodite, to punish the King, casts a spell that makes the Queen fall in love with the bull. The Queen is so in love, that she crawls inside a specially made hollow cow so she can get 'busy" with the bull.
The Minotaur is the result of the mating.

Hippocampus

The Hippocampus, thought by ancient Greeks to be the adult form of the seahorse.
They pulled Poseidon's chariot through the seas.
On a side note, a lucrative freelance gig helped me to save a nice sum of money.
At an art fair, I saw a fantastic carving of a Hippocampus, like you would find on a carousel. Tempted to buy it, the Voice of Reason told me to use the money instead as a down payment on my first house.
True story.

Scylla

Today's Greek mythological beastie is Scylla. You may know her from the Police song "Wrapped Around Your Finger".
She was on one side of a narrow strait of water, and Charybdis, a creature that would suck down whole ships in a whirlpool in order to eat the crew, was on the other side.
So, just like being caught between a rock and a hard place, sailors would have to choose whether to lose six of their crew, Scylla had six dog heads that would snatch the men from the deck of the ship, or risk losing everything to the whirlpool.
The stories vary about how this beautiful woman came to be transformed into this monster, but it is safe to say that it was tough to be good looking back then.
Goddesses and other magical beings were very jealous in those days, and often put the smack down on those blessed with straight teeth and clear skin.
Things must have loosened up quite a bit in our times, otherwise Hollywood would be full of monsters.

The Chimera

Today's sketch is one of the most unusual beasts in Greek mythology, the Chimera.
Body and head of a lion, the head of a goat in the middle of her back, with a deadly serpent for a tail.
Fire breathing with poisonous breath and venom, a real beauty of an obstacle for any intrepid hero.

I bid on a job on the oDesk board, and lost out to another designer.
The job was to use an existing character and turn him into a centaur.
The more I got to thinking about it, I realized that I wasn't bummed about losing the project, I was miffed about not drawing a centaur.
Then I thought, why not draw your own?
So, here he is, with sword and shield,(even though they were expert at the bow).

So..I had to do a quick drawing.

Developing a Character

A potential client contacted me, telling me that they liked my work, and that they wanted a mascot created for their company and thought that I was the guy to do it.
After a few SKYPEs back and forth, I got to work on the design.
The company deals things such as servers, band width, and streaming video.
First, I drew a few roughs based on the conversation I had with them.

They liked the wizardly looking character, but wanted him more business like, not so much "elf".
So I drew this guy.

Getting closer to the look they wanted, so I added color.

It was decided that they didn't want the hat.
( I work in layers to keep things organized, so ta daaa)

Decided to lose the glasses.

( Who loves layers? I do!)

Noodler!

Got myself a fantastic fountain pen, a Waterman Phileas, so I am busy breaking it in.
I ran through the ink cartridge that was supplied, and did some research on good inks to use in the converter.
Came across a strangely named company, Noodler's Ink, and had to try it.
When our daughter was born, she was under weight, and we had to feed her every two hours.
Sleep deprived, we found ourselves watching all sorts of things on tv.
One of the most fascinating things on was a documentary about the sport of "noodling".
This is the practice of finding a catfish hole, and sticking your arm in it, in hopes that the fish will latch on to your arm, allowing you to catch it.
I saw it maybe three times, but I think Amy managed to watch it almost everytime it was on.
So, in honor of my Noodler's Ink, which is working great by the way, I present a successful Noodler.

Friend, protector, goof-ball, pain in the ass, and constant companion.

Today we went to the vet, and I came home alone.
Almost 14 years old, and a fighter to the end.
Over the years, she had very few doggie friends, but two come to mind right away.

There was Maggie, a tubby beagle.
Here they are, walking the pounds off of Maggie, at my old house.

And then there was Fiona, the next door neighbor's dog.
Fiona would slip under the fence, and wait for Candy to come out to play.

The two of them would chase each other around the yard, as fast as could be...

After all of that activity, they would get pooped. Then they would hang out until they got their second wind, and then they'd take it from the top.

That was many years ago.
As I write this, the sun is shining, and the air has a coolness to it, truly a beautiful day.
I'd like to think that the two of them will meet again, and get that second wind, and start the game again .

To the untrained eye, these two creatures may appear alike. So, as a public service,
I will point out the subtle differences between the Zombie and the Elderly.
First, Zombies stink. While the Elderly usually don't smell of rotten flesh, they both smell a little better after a hot, soapy shower.
Second, while both Zombies and the Elderly appear to have a glazed, unfocused look
to their eyes, in the Elderly that is usually due to cataracts, or a side effect of medication; while in the Zombie it is due to their brains being reduced to mush.
The main difference between them is the Elderly's death grip on the remote
control to the TV, due to their fanatic
love of " Cake Boss " and " Dancing with the Stars ".

It's funny how things happen. Here I've been drawing Zombie cartoons for a few weeks, and then I see an ad for an animated zombie production that's looking for character designers, animators, etc.
So..today I present a Zombie Elf in hopes of getting on the staff.

This Sunday will be the season finale of AMC's " Mad Men ".
So...take one hard-drinking, chain-smoking advertising exec, and combine
the living dead, shake vigorously, and you have today's zombie...Zombie Mad Man!
Here we see him pitching a new campaign aimed at...well, zombies.
It pays to advertise.
